Aphrodite Today

How can the ancient Aphrodite captivate the contemporary imagination? This question was answered by the graphic artists from the Hollar association and their guests with words, but above all with their works, which were exhibited from September to November 2021 in the Art and Science Gallery of the Academy of Sciences. The publication also presents and analyses Michal Gabriel's monumental sculpture The Birth of Venus from 2011-2012. This has been juxtaposed in the exhibition with plaster casts of famous sculptures of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, known to the Romans as Venus. The unique project was the result of a collaboration between the scientific community and contemporary Czech artists, who were brought together by the topical themes of the early 21st century - women and the ancient artistic tradition embodied by Aphrodite.
