Between Dissent, Underground and the Grey Zone

MIKULECKÝ JAKUB

Before 1989, Czech and Slovak readers encountered Bulgarian literature on a daily basis, but of course it was not presented in its complete form in the Czechoslovakia of that time. Like in other countries east of the Iron Curtain, there was also unofficial (samizdat, banned) literature in Bulgaria. This book presents the first comprehensive look at unofficial Bulgarian writing in the context of the totalitarian regime there. Individual chapters offer possible interpretative solutions to selected literary texts in a broader cultural and political context. Excerpts of poems, prose, dramas, essays, and manifesto texts are presented in the book in Czech, making the monograph accessible not only to professional circles of Bulgarianists, Slavists, literary historians, and students, but also to the broader general public.
