Czechoslovakia and the New Europe

PROKŠ PETR

This publication examines the emergence and early years of independent Czechoslovakia in its international context. The results of the Great War and subsequent developments brought about fundamental changes in the power relations in Europe. First of all, it was the military victory of the Western Allies over Germany and Austria-Hungary. With the end of the Great War, the imperial regime in Germany was overthrown and the Habsburg Empire, the Romanov Empire of Tsarist Russia and the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Traditional and new states had to react to and cope with all these realities. Among them was Czechoslovakia, which was still struggling militarily and diplomatically for international recognition and to ensure its security and continued existence.
