History of Czech Literature in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia

JANOUŠEK PAVEL

The aim of this book is to understand the transformations of Czech literature between September 1938 and May 1945, or how it was changed and shaped by events such as the German occupation, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the outbreak of World War II, the changing situation on the fighting fronts, and the liberation of Czechoslovakia. The specific domestic "prelude" to these events, i.e. the period after the Munich dictatorship and during the Second Czechoslovak Republic (from the autumn of 1938 to the spring of 1939), is not left aside. The book explores the connection between the creative choice of a topic and the circumstances under which it took place. It does not only focus on literature in the narrow sense of the word, i.e. poetry, prose and drama with artistic ambitions and for adults, but also on non-fiction and popular literature, as well as literature for children and young adults. It does not leave aside the relationship between literature and theatre, radio or film, or the literary dimension of contemporary urban folklore, or school literary education.
