History of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences I (1952-1962)

FRANC MARTIN

The first volume of a four-volume collective publication devoted to the history of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (CSAV) deals with the first decade of its existence, when it was headed by Zdeněk Nejedlý. It also describes the circumstances of the establishment of this key scientific institution in the second half of the 20th century. The publication examines the development of the entire institution, as well as the changes among the members and leadership of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in a broad political and social context. It also reflects upon the development of selected key scholarly and scientific institutions and some common institutions and facilities. Great attention is paid to the issue of international contacts, which is always extremely important for science, and the book also contains medallions of the most important personalities in the leadership of the then Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The book is accompanied by a number of illustrations and extensive appendices, especially a list of all members and research institutes of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the years 1952–1962.
