Scintillation Materials

JARÝ VÍTĚZSLAV, PEJCHAL JAN

In recent years, the number of industrial, medical, security and scientific applications that require the detection of invisible ionising radiation (e.g. gamma and X-rays) has skyrocketed. The present book describes scintillation materials that are suitable for these purposes. These materials transform the energy of high-energy ionising radiation into photons from the ultraviolet or visible region, which can then be converted into an electrical signal and further processed using conventional photodetectors. Some of the best-known applications where these materials can be encountered include computed tomography, the LHC particle detectors at CERN, and the monitoring drones used around Fukushima in Japan.
