The Amber Road

BOLINA PAVEL, CÍLEK VÁCLAV, MARTÍNEK JAN

The Amber Road is a system of ancient routes that originally connected the Celtic and Etruscan areas of northern Italy, but later led through Aquileia towards Carnuntum near Bratislava and along a shorter foothill route to Vienna and from there via southern Moravia to Brno, around the Bull Rock in the Moravian Karst, on to the Drahanská vrchovina and through the Jeseníky Mountains to Poland. The routes ended at large amber workshops in Lower Visla basin near Gdańsk. Several tens of thousands of detailed lidar images of Moravia made it possible for the first time to reconstruct the course of the route according to terrain relics and archaeological objects mostly from the Early and Late Iron Age. In addition to general chapters on the civilisational significance of the ancient routes, the book deals in particular with the Amber Road section leading through the Moravian landscape.
