Great Terror in Ukraine/Velký teror na Ukrajině 1937–1938: perzekuce české menšiny

DVOŘÁK JAN, KOLEKTIV

This collection of documents of the repressive organs of the Soviet Union recalls the tragedy of the Czech minority in Soviet Ukraine during the Great Terror in 1937-1938. It contains a total of 100 documents by NKVD (People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs – the Soviet Union interior ministry). Published bilingually, in the original Russian and in a Czech translation, these documents reveal the extent of Soviet state terror exerted against Czechs living in Ukraine. In fabricated trials, they were most often accused of membership in non-existent nationalist counter-revolutionary organisations, but in reality, they were only "guilty" of their nationality. The collection presents several types of documents: reports on the uncovering of alleged "Czech spy agencies", statistical reports on the course of mass events, and especially documents from the investigation of individual persons – arrest reports, interrogation reports, and execution reports. Based on research, it has so far been confirmed that the Soviet regime murdered more than 660 Czechs on the territory of Ukraine. This was the worst political repression against Czechs on the territory of the Soviet Union.
