A Different Climate – A Different Forest

PETŘÍK PETR, FANTA JOSEF

Climate has always been considered an independent habitat factor in forestry. However, climate change represents a significant change in the conditions for the development, functioning and growth of forests as an irreplaceable part of our landscape. This change must be considered in the economic use of forests. One consequence of neglecting this principle is the ongoing bark beetle calamity, one of the largest in terms of scale and impact in the history of Central European forestry. The aim of the publication A Different Climate - A Different Forest is to encourage a change in one-sided thinking and to adopt a different way of managing forests than the consuming approach. We do not yet know how climate change will continue to evolve, where it will stop and what its impacts on forests will be. In our view, a shift towards nature-based management using natural forest processes is the key to the sustainability of natural resources, including biodiversity, in this uncertain future.
