Academic Handbook of the Czech Language, second, expanded edition

The second, revised and expanded edition of the Academic Handbook of the Czech Language by a collective of authors from the Czech Language Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences, officially approved by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports.

The Handbook contains information about the Czech language, especially about spelling, phonology, morphemology, morphology, word formation, and some syntactic phenomena, and also chapters about the formal arrangement of written texts and linguistic etiquette. In comparison with the present Rules of Czech Spelling and grammar books, some of the explanations in the Handbook are more detailed and coherent (for example when dealing with the use of capital letters, punctuation, agreement of subject and predicate, and the declension of personal and geographical nouns). Also mentioned in the explanations are discrepancies in the information given by various linguistic handbooks, or differences between the codified form and the literary norm. In such cases an evaluative commentary and recommended solution are added. This edition of the Handbook includes new chapters about pronunciation and the derivation of feminine forms from masculine nouns. The book is intended for all those interested in the Czech language, both the general public and those who use the language professionally, especially teachers and students.
