Baroque Landscaping on the Saxe-Lauenburg Estates between 1635 and 1740

VOKURKA MICHAL

The research of landscape in the Baroque period is often associated with a certain type of idealisation of the relationship of pre-modern man to the landscape he inhabited. Using the seventeen estates of the dukes and princesses of Saxe-Lauenburg as an example, this publication shows that the approach of the nobility to the landscape was in many ways more pragmatic than that of the existing literature. In addition to its undeniable aesthetic and economic function, the composed landscape also played a role in social communication. The representation of the nobility, the legitimation of power and the affirmation of the existing social order as well as the issue of confessionalisation were emphasised in contemporary landscaping. The landscaping of the Saxe-Lauenburgs between 1635 and 1740 is explored with regard to the ideological background of the projects and the general level of thinking about what is called the (Bohemian) Baroque landscape. This is also enabled by the comparative view at the end of the text.
