Non-Native Tree Species in Czech Forestry: Their Potential under Changing Environmental Conditions

PODRÁZSKÝ VILÉM, CÍLEK VÁCLAV, DUŠEK DAVID

Amid major climatic and environmental change, both Czech and European forestry are faced with the challenge of securing stable and functional forest stands. Forestry programs in neighboring European countries therefore anticipate the introduction of more resilient, though non-native, species such as Douglas fir, certain oaks, and other woody plants. It is essential, however, that any such species be environmentally compatible while also economically viable. This publication aims to summarize the available information on both common and less familiar yet promising tree species, from both ecological and economic perspectives. Written by 18 authors from several major forestry research institutions, the book presents a synthesis of practical results obtained mainly over the past decade in the course of numerous research projects. It is intended primarily to assist municipalities, forest owners, and forest enthusiasts in planning a balanced natural environment.
