Portraits of Intellectuals between 1516 and 1620

The monograph offers an interdisciplinary view of the portraits of scholars, physicians, priests, poets and other intellectual professionals of the early modern period. The portraits preserved in old prints and manuscripts have been examined from the perspective of art history and the history of clothing, and attention is also paid to accompanying texts. The publication includes a comprehensive catalogue of more than one hundred portraits, many of which are being published for the first time. The authors observe the self-representation of intellectuals, whether it is manifested in the engagement of a distinguished artist, in elegant attire, or in poems of praise for the personality or work of the person depicted.
