Professors of the Prague Utraquist University in the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period (1

HOLÝ MARTIN, HOLÁ MLADA

This book focuses on the as yet little-studied issue of the professors of the Prague Utraquist University in the late Middle Ages and early modern period, specifically in the period from the definitive assertion of the utraquist character of the university teaching in the 1550s to its takeover by the Jesuits in 1622. Based on the analysis of typologically diverse sources, in accordance with the latest methodological trends, and in comparison with similar projects abroad, it examines the terminology associated with the profession, the prerequisites for its exercise, the social, geographical, national or confessional composition of the Prague university teachers, their educational curricula, their actual teaching and other activities at the university, the everyday life of the professors, including their material background and their parallel or subsequent careers after leaving the university. It also focuses on their libraries, literary activities, various forms of sponsorship and contacts with the European scholarship community. It also examines the circumstances of the professors' deaths and the locations of their burials. Appendices form an integral part of the monograph, the most extensive of them contains brief biographies of almost two hundred of the personalities studied.
