The Apple of Steel

SVOBODA DAVID

The conflicting themes associated with the names of S. Bandera and R. Shukhevych, as well as the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, arouse passions far from the borders of the post-Soviet territory. The events in Ukraine in 2014 showed the susceptibility of this issue to abuse, whether by the perpetrators of the revived Russian aggression, Polish nationalists, or Ukrainian political technologists of the post-Soviet era. The book is the first attempt in the Czech academic environment to provide an objective picture of the birth and formative stage of a movement whose historical role divides not only historians but also entire nations and their political representations. The book deals with the Polish-Ukrainian national rivalry against the background of the history of interwar Europe, but its scope extends back to the 19th century, whose spirit was cut short by the First World War, and does not stop at the dramatic events in Czechoslovak Transcarpathian Ruthenia of the post-Munich Treaty period.
