The Chronicle of the Second Republic

PADEVĚT JIŘÍ

The Second Republic of Czechoslovakia lasted for a very short time, from the autumn of 1938 to the spring of 1939. Yet, in this short period, from a historical point of view, the disintegration of the state can be observed very clearly as it was gripped by enemies on all sides. This disintegration was caused not only by external enemies and European powers but also by the inhabitants of Czechoslovakia, for whom the idea of Czechoslovakia was an empty concept. Unfortunately, the fate of the people of the Second Republic also shows very well how easily society turns its back on the weakest, whether they were refugees from the border, political emigrants or Jews. To a certain extent, the book offers a synthesis of the history of „everyday“ life of the Second Republic, as it somewhat automatically puts individual events entirely into context.
