The Expeditions to the Self

The book presents papers from the 41st edition of the Pilsen interdisciplinary symposium devoted to manifestations of individualism during the "long" 19th century. The issues related to self-reflection, self-presentation or self-realization resonated in different ways in the world of men and women from the bourgeoisie, the working class and the aristocracy. The authors of the studies pay attention to distinct personalities and the often complex search for and definition of their position in society - in relation to ideological projects, artistic conventions, etc. In the publication, which includes a pictorial appendix, the issue of individualism is approached from the perspective of history, philosophy, literary history, musicology, theatre studies and art history.
