The Protectorate Chronicle

PADEVĚT JIŘÍ

The Protectorate Chronicle captures day by day events in the state administration, resistance and culture. In a chronicle form – a precise date and a brief description of an event – it firstly offers an overview of what happened at the time. But it also provides a kind of synthesis of the history of the "everyday" life in the Protectorate by putting all events in context. During the six years of the Protectorate, millions of people's fates were changed or ended. Some died, some lost their loved ones or property, some found courage and some were consumed by fear. The Czech resistance, Nazi and Protectorate repression, the holocaust of Czech and Moravian Jews, the genocide of the Roma and the so-called antisocial elements, the combat operations of the American, Soviet, and Romanian armies changed the fates of people, including those who believed until the last moment that they would remain on the edge of the historical catastrophe and nothing would happen to them.
