FOSSIL TRACES OF ANIMALS IN BOHEMIA AND MORAVIA

MIKULÁŠ RADEK

The Fossil Traces of Animals in Bohemia and Moravia atlas is the first opportunity for the Czech reader to look into the so far unseen world of one of the scientific disciplines with its own terminology, logic and aesthetic aspects. This discipline is called ichnology and it deals with a much wider range of objects than fossil footprints or rows of footprints. Among the most important of other " traces" we will deal with burrows, commonly known from dryland environments as the dwelling places of mammals. Burrows as dwellings of invertebrates in the seafloor are, however, much more numerous and diverse. We will also present a wide range of food traces, such as galleries on the seafloor, feeding marks deep in the seafloor, and complex structures literally used to grow and harvest food. Jiří Svoboda, a renowned illustrator of the prehistoric world, in close collaboration with the author of the text, has accompanied the book with ten surprising insights into the world of ichnology. So far, no one in the world has ventured into a similar feat. The book can serve not only as an atlas but also as a guidebook, as most of the sites of the selected fossil traces still exist and the data on access to the sites are detailed in the book.
